From office design to makeup: Cargo Interiors launches BUG for Men Cosmetics

The owner of an office design company in Torfaen has launched a new line of makeup for men called BUG for Men. Cwmbran-based Cargo Interiors Limited has secured a £ 50,000 micro loan from the Development Bank of Wales to support the cosmetics launch. Founded in 2019 by Managing Director Carl Gough, the office design and construction company has decided to launch a new component for its business in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic.

With the office closing and the shift to remote and hybrid working, Carl decided to seek out new ways to use his design flair. Tired of the stigma of men using beauty products, Carl decided to conduct extensive research on the cosmetics industry. As a result of this research, Carl launched BUG for Men – a line of cruelty-free, alcohol-free vegetarian cosmetics specifically for men. BUG for Men operates alongside its existing office design and build business, which has recently seen an increase in demand for services as businesses redesign office spaces for a post-pandemic world.

Carl said: “During the first lockdown of 2020 it became clear that the way we work was going to fundamentally change. I researched the gaps in the market where I could use my existing skills and decided to launch our BUG for Men cosmetics brand.

“A lot of men feel embarrassed about putting on makeup, but would still love to do it – especially now around the time of the Zoom call. I researched and developed our product, but needed support with marketing and buying shares – this is where the loan from the Development Bank of Wales really helped. I was referred to Claire from the Development Bank by Cornerstone Finance. The process went smoothly and clearly and I was able to secure the funding I needed to bring BUG for Men to our new clients. As many companies increasingly move towards a hybrid working model, the two sides of the business really complement each other. ”

The deal was structured on behalf of the Development Bank of Wales by Claire Vokes. She said: “Carl’s research really highlighted a gap in the current market. He already has experience running a successful business and has come to us with an exciting and well thought out growth plan. We are delighted to support him with this micro loan and look forward to seeing his business flourish in the years to come. ”
