Every mother wants only the best for her baby. Since babies’ needs change as they grow, it seems quite difficult to choose the right products for their growing needs. Either way, you should never end up choosing a baby product that is formulated for adults.
Senior Pediatrician Arun Wadhwa on behalf of Cetaphil Baby India helps us understand why it is important to choose PAMAS-free baby care products (parabens, animal and mineral oils, alcohol and soap).
This is how PAMAS products harm baby’s skin
Paraben is a chemical compound used in some products to kill bacteria and prevent the product from breaking down. Parabens are thought to interfere with your body’s immune system and are particularly harmful to your little one’s skin. Parabens and preservatives can harm your baby and should be kept completely away from your newborn baby.
Animal oil does not absorb well and is low in linoleic acid (fatty), which is extremely harmful to sensitive newborn skin. It is one of the main components that cause allergies and rashes on the skin of a baby due to the high levels of fat.
Mineral oil can lead to hardening of the skin, which can lead to additional dryness. This mineral oil tends to clog your baby’s skin pores, which in turn damages the skin’s natural protective layer, causing long-term damage.
Alcohol is commonly used in adult skin care products to make them dry quickly and make them light on the skin. But alcohol can be very drying and can irritate your baby’s skin. A baby’s skin is extremely soft and can become sensitive to the harmful components of alcohol, causing long-term damage.
Soaps are made without a mixture of fats and alkaline additives, so they are not formulated to hydrate baby’s skin. The pH level is very high in soaps which are harsh and remove natural oils from the baby’s skin. Syndet bars are definitely more recommended than soap bars.
There are concerns that parabens will only be absorbed by infants by adults, making them more vulnerable to any potential harmful effects. Therefore, indulging yourself with PAMAS-free products is the key to better nourishing baby’s skin.
